How to Make a Christmas Ball Tree Skirt

    • 1). Cut a square of green felt so that it is 60 inches long on all four sides. Position the square in a diamond shape. Fold the top corner to the bottom corner. This creates a triangle. Fold that triangle in half to create a smaller triangle.

    • 2). Move the triangle so that the longest side is facing you. Attach a bulldog clip (a steel clip found at any office supply store) to the corner opposite you. Attach a long piece of string to the clip, so the string falls below the edge of the fabric. Use a second clip to attach a piece of tailor's chalk to the string. Hold the string straight down tightly. It should be bisecting the bottom of the triangle. Slide up the clip until the chalk rests one inch above the bottom of the fabric.

    • 3). Hold the chalk firmly and swing to the right side of the fabric so that you are marking an arch on the fabric. Bring it back to the center, and swing to the left side of the fabric. Make sure your chalk lines are easy to see. Cut along the line through all the folds of fabric.

    • 4). Put a small plate or saucer on the top corner of the felt. The top rim of the saucer should be even with the point of the triangle. Use a piece of tailor's chalk to trace the bottom of the saucer on the fabric. Cut along that line, through all the folds of fabric. This will create the hole that wraps around your tree's trunk.

    • 5). Unfold your fabric Use your tailor's chalk to draw a straight line from the bottom of the felt to the center hole. Cut that line. This will enable you to open up the skirt, and wrap it around the tree.

    • 6). Decorate the outside edge of the skirt by trimming it with pinking shears. Use your tailor's chalk to make a small mark one inch above the edge. Position your hole punch on that mark to make a small hole. Make another mark one inch beside the hole, and one inch above the hem. Use your hole punch again. Repeat all the way around the around the skirt.

    • 7). Use the bottom of the juice can as a pattern. Put it on the tree skirt and trace around it a black marker. Fill in the circle with red fabric paint to create a Christmas ball. Add more balls around the skirt, alternating red and silver paint.

    • 8). Cut 1/2 inch wide red ribbon into four inch lengths. Tie the ribbon into small bows. Cut 1/2 wide silver ribbon into four inch lengths. Tie into small bows. Hot glue one bow to the top of each ball on the skirt.

    • 9). Measure the outside of your skirt. Cut 1/2 inch red ribbon to that length. Weave the ribbon in and out of the holes around the skirt. Hot glue the ends in place underneath the skirt and your skirt is complete.
