- Raw potatoes are dumped into large vats in the plant for washing. The clean potatoes are inserted into a cylindrical industrial peeler and then dumped onto a large sorting table. Irregularly shaped and blemished potatoes are removed by machine and hand sorting.
- Potato chip plants have giant slicers with revolving centralized blades. The potatoes are dropped one by one into the peeler and come out the bottom cut into thin disks about 1/20 inch thick.
- After being washed a second time and air-dried, the potato chips are fried. Potato chip plants use long vats to fry the chips in a shallow pool of oil. The raw potato slices are loaded at the back of the fryer and the momentum of the hot oil propels them to the front when they are done.
- The finished chips fall onto a conveyor belt where they are seasoned and inspected again before packaging.
