- 1). Visit your general dentist to be checked for cavities, gum disease and other issues first. This is a crucial step that you must take before visiting an orthodontist---in most cases the general dentist will refer you to an orthodontist.
- 2). Resolve any dental issues. An orthodontist will not put braces on your teeth if you have issues with your teeth that require attention. All cavities must be filled and dental surgery must be completed, if necessary. In some cases, an orthodontist will suggest that you have your wisdom teeth pulled before she puts on braces.
- 3). Ask your orthodontist about the various choices regarding braces and corresponding costs. Standard metal or ceramic braces will usually cost anywhere from $2,500 to $7,000. Invisalign braces, which are virtually invisible on the teeth, can cost $5,000 or more for the tray alone (up to $10,000 for the complete treatment).
- 4). Decide if you want your braces on the front (usual) or the back of the teeth (more expensive).
- 5). See if your insurance plan covers orthodontics. In most cases it will cover a portion (70 to 80 percent). Non-traditional cosmetic braces may not be covered. Examine your plan and submit your treatment plan to your insurance company.
- 6). Negotiate a payment plan with your orthodontist if you do not have insurance. Some will allow you to pay a portion of your bill each month interest-free.
- 7). Schedule an appointment with the orthodontist to have your braces put on. The process will take about two hours.
- 8). Visit your orthodontist once a month to have your braces adjusted. She has to continuously monitor the progress of your teeth so that they will straighten properly.
