- 1). Mask off the area you wish to apply the glitter to by covering adjacent surfaces with masking paper secured in place with masking tape.
- 2). Mix one ounce of silver crystal metallic flake into 2 to 5 quarts of clear coat paint. The more flake added, the greater the glitter effect. Use a wooden paint stick to mix the powder in thoroughly.
- 3). Thin the clear coat paint with a compatible thinner for use with an HVLP paint sprayer, using the paint-to-thinner ratio recommended by the HVLP manufacturer. Fill the paint reservoir on the sprayer with the thinned paint.
- 4). Turn on the air compressor for the sprayer. Hold the nozzle of the sprayer pointed directly at the gel coat surface, about 12 inches from the surface.
- 5). Trigger the sprayer in order to begin the flow of clear coat onto the gel coat surface. Move the sprayer back and forth to apply the clear coat in an even layer. Cover the entire surface with the clear coat and then allow about 2 hours drying time to determine the glitter effect. Apply a second layer of the clear coat to the surface to increase the glitter effect. Wait about 12 hours for the final coat to dry, and then remove the masking tape and paper.
