- 1). Place a small mesh sifter over a bowl and add 1/4 cup fresh henna powder to the bowl. Gently tap the sifter against the bowl to sift out any large chunks of henna. Fresh henna is a rich green color and smells like freshly cut grass. Stale henna powder is tan in color and will not produce a good paste.
- 2). Add 1/4 cup lemon juice to the bowl and stir to combine. The acid in the lemon juice produces a chemical reaction when it comes in contact with the henna and releases the dye molecules. Continue stirring the mixture until is completely combined and is the consistency of mashed potatoes.
- 3). Cover the paste with plastic wrap and place in a warm location for at least 24 hours before use. The warmth of the atmosphere draws the maximum amount of dye from the powder and produces a richer color during application. Make sure to press the plastic wrap against the top of the paste, pressing gently to remove air bubbles.
- 4). Remove the plastic wrap and stir to combine before application. The paste will darken as it releases more dye, and needs to be thoroughly combined to evenly distribute the dye. Apply the paste in the application of your choice, discarding any leftover paste.
