How to Make a Tundra Food Web

    • 1). Write the words "Tundra Food Web" at the top of the paper in one color of pencil or marker. Under that title, write the words, "Arctic Wolf," "Polar Bear," and "Snowy Owl" all on one straight line in another color of pencils. These are the primary tundra carnivores. Try to have all of the animal names centered in the paper and spaced out by at least one inch.

    • 2). Write "Arctic Fox" and "Brown Bear" on one straight line in a third color about three inches under the first animals. These are the secondary carnivores (however, the brown bear is an omnivore). Next, write "Pika," "Musk Ox," "Caribou," "Lemming," and "Arctic Hare" in a fourth color three inches under the last two animals. These are the herbivores.

    • 3). Write "Liverwort," Grasses," "Caribou Moss," and "Lichens" again three inches under the last animals in a fifth color. These are the plants or producers.

    • 4). Find a picture of each animal and plant from your Tundra Food Web in the copies of nature magazines like National Geographic and cut it out. If you cannot find a picture of one of the creatures or if the pictures you find are too large to fit on the web, you can also look online for pictures. If you can't find suitable pictures that way, you can look in the encyclopedia and draw (as best you can) a picture of the animal above its name. Paste the pictures web above the animal name for each level of the web.

    • 5). Connect the creatures to complete the web by drawing overlapping arrows. For the first level, draw an arrow from the liverworts to the pika. Next, draw an arrow from grasses to the pika, musk ox, caribou, brown bears and lemmings. Draw an arrow from the caribou moss to the caribou. Lastly, draw an arrow from the lemmings and arctic hare. These arrows show the direction from predator to prey. The arrow start at the prey and points to the predator that hunts and consumes them.

    • 6). Connect the second level to the third and fourth levels. Connect the pikas to the arctic fox and brown bear. Connect the musk ox to the arctic wolf. Connect the caribou to the arctic wolf. Connect the lemmings to the arctic fox, brown bear and snowy owl. Connect the arctic hare to the brown bear and the snowy owl. Remember, these arrows show relationship of predator to prey, meaning for example that pika, lemmings and arctic hare are all eaten by the brown bear.

    • 7). Draw an arrow from the arctic fix to the arctic wolf, polar bear and snowy owl. If desired, draw a large bracket around the entire Tundra Food Web and write bacteria and fungi outside of the web, since bacteria and fungi are decomposers.
