Spooky Ideas for a Corn Maze

    Characters

    • Dress actors to resemble many different scary characters. Their locations can be anywhere throughout the maze. Those hidden from view can lie in wait to jump out and scare unsuspecting visitors. Others may be visible in unsuspecting ways, such as posing like a statue or mannequin to give the visitor a false sense of security. Examples of costumes include scarecrows, zombies, vampires and monsters. Makeup and wigs may add to the appearance of the character. If face masks are in use, make sure the eyes and mouth are not obstructed.

    Lighting

    • Lighting can make a maze spookier. For example, red flood lights enhance the colors of fake blood, and orange complements pumpkins. Shadows help to change an area's appearance and disorient visitors. Some areas need to be lighted to ensure safety. This, of course, depends on the layout.

    Props

    • Props help to add a spooky feeling. Owls or crows at the opening work to provide a scary invitation, especially when equipped with movement. Pumpkins spread throughout can have scary, carved faces with lights inside to draw attention to the effect. Tombstones can be placed in various spots or in one location to recreate a graveyard setting. For an older appearance, add cobwebs or moss. Dirt may also be piled up behind stones to imply an actual grave. Coffins may also be on display as part of the grave site.

    Sound

    • Speakers can be added to various parts of the maze for sound effects or music. Theses sounds may enhance a character or prop. CDs are available with a variety of scary sounds for Halloween. The same sound effects do not have to be in use for the entire maze. For instance, try screams or cries at certain points while placing sounds of thunder or howling wind at other spots.

    Fog Machines

    • Fog machines alter the appearance of the area by hiding effects and disorienting the visitor. This is also useful in hiding parts of the attraction that show how effects are created. Projectors will turn the fog into a screen for any visuals. For example, project an image of a monster on the fog and it will appear as if it is floating near the visitors. If possible, use video to present a more realistic effect.
