There are a number of helpful rules to remember when choosing eyeglass frames. The shape of your face, your coloring, personality and lifestyle all play a role in which eyeglasses suit you best. Differently shaped eyeglass frames flatter different faces, so follow these rules when choosing the right frames for you. - Not everyone has the same face shape, so choose frames that flatter your specific shape. Frames that contrast with the shape of your face are most flattering. Round faces are flattered by frames that are angular and narrow, such as rectangular frames. Oval faces are flattered by styles that are as wide as the widest part of the face and are subtly round or walnut-shaped. Heart-shaped faces are complemented by glasses that are wider at the bottom and are light-colored or rimless. A diamond-shaped face is flattered by glasses that have a cat-eye look or are oval and rimless. If your face is oblong, choose frames that are tall and broad with an accented top rim. Square faces look best in frames that are oval, round or butterfly-shaped, and triangular faces are complemented by styles that are semi-rimless and top-heavy, with bottoms that angle inward.
- Frames flatter your face even more when you choose a pair that complements your undertones and coloring. Choose eyeglasses in a color that is the same as your natural undertones. According to the All About Vision website: "A cool complexion has blue or pink undertones, and a warm complexion has a 'peaches and cream' or yellow cast. Olive skin is considered cool because it is a mixture of blue and yellow." Eye and hair color also help determine your undertones. The eyes may be a cooler or warmer brown, as with the hair. If you have different undertones in your skin, eyes and hair, choose glasses with a variation of shades to complement your coloring.
- The shape of your eyeglasses is ultimately up to you. For the most satisfaction, it is best to choose glasses that match your personality and lifestyle. While some prefer muted, refined glasses for a business setting, others prefer thicker, strongly shaped glasses for a more creative setting and lifestyle. Someone active in the social scene probably prefers trendy and contemporary glasses over simple, traditional glasses. Activity level and lifestyle also play a role in choosing frames. Some frames are more fragile than others, so if you are extremely active and always on the run, choose glasses made from a sturdier material.
