- 1). Measure, mark and cut two 6-foot pieces of 1-by-6-inch lumber and one 6-foot piece of 1-by-8-inch lumber.
- 2). Measure, mark and cut eleven 6-inch pieces of 1/2-inch flat trim.
- 3). Place the two pieces of 6-in wide lumber on thier long edges, standing parallel to each other. Place the piece of 8-inch wide lumber on top of the two 6-inch pieces to form a bridge. All edges should be flush. Screw the 8-inch piece to the 6-inch piece edges, using 1 1/2-inch to 2-inch wood screws. Place the screws every 6 to 8-inches apart.
- 4). Flip the bridge over so there are two sides and a bottom. This is your sluice box structure. Cut a piece of short shag carpeting 6-inches wide and 6-feet long. Lay the carpeting on the bottom of the box. Staple the outer edges of the carpet into place so it will not move inside the sluice box.
- 5). Place 1/2-inch cut pieces of flat trim every 6-inches over the top of the carpet. Start at one end and work down the carpeting. Place the trim so it lays across the carpet and makes a 90 degree angle to the wood sides. Use 1-inch wood screws to secure the wood trim to the bottom of the sluice box. These are the riffles.
- 6). Stop placing riffles 12-inches from one end. This is the end of the sluice that is elevated. Sand is placed in this area and washed down the sluice box.
