Colors That Look Good with Red

Red is a difficult color to complement effectively, whether in decorating a room or choosing clothes. However, popular taste has changed over the years regarding which colors are all right with red. For example, traditionally, redheads were told that their hair clashed with green, blue and yellow, and that they should stick to neutral clothing colors. This is no longer the case, and many people with red hair find they can choose a range of colors which complement their hair.

    Find a Color Palette

    • To choose clothing colors to go with a bright or strong red, use a color palette, which is a series of strips of color showing different shades that complement each other, such as red with a blue, a gray and a black. Remember that even if all the colors go with red, they might not match each other. You should also beware of choosing too many strong colors or designs, as this can detract from the subtle combining of colors that best suits red. You should select a range of colors from these palettes which will suit your own clothing style.

    Greens and Blues

    • The combination of green and red does not have to be limited to the Christmas season. Put a pale green with a larger black piece, such as a red dress with black cardigan and pale green hat or gloves. Green can also accompany red on its own, but be careful about choosing dark green unless you want to wear it to a Christmas party. Don't match your green with reds that are too striking: A lipstick red should be combined with colors darker than green. Blues also can be used, as long as the colors are not too bold. Sky blues can look very good with a pale red.

    Using Darker Shades

    • One good way of complementing your hair color, or some red clothing, is to use darker colors. This does not mean you have to dress only in black for the rest of your life, as you can also use purples and browns with a bright red color. Another answer is to match colors with different types of red. A brick red, which is more brown, can take shades of greens or blues, while a dark red could look stunning with a dark purple skirt or coat. Just be careful not to overdo the dark colors, unless it is Halloween.
