Do I Need to Lift Weights?

A major consideration in answering the question "How do I lose belly fat?" is whether or not you need to lift weights to lose weight.
The answer to the question "Do I need to lift weights?" is a definitive maybe.
Lifting weight doesn't really help you burn calories.
What lifting weights does for you is it helps you burn sugar.
Here's why that is important.
When there is a lot of sugar in your bloodstream, if you're not diabetic, you pancreas squirts out a lot of insulin to move into fat and muscle cells and your liver.
They are equipped to store glucose sugar as glycogen.
In fact, you can't build muscles if they don't have glycogen.
The problem is that insulin does more than just store sugar.
It also stores fat.
It is some 300 times more effective for storing fat than it is for storing sugar.
So if you have a lot of insulin floating around because your pancreas got a signal that your body needed to store sugar, you are going to feed not just your muscles, you are also going to feed your fat cells.
And you are going to feed your fat cells 300 times more efficiently than you are going to feed your muscle.
Weight lifting, and, for that matter, any aerobic exercise you do fast enough that you get out of breath, burns glucose 30 times faster than aerobic exercise that you do an easy pace.
Weight lifting does not burn calories, but it does reduce your body's need for insulin so it does not store new fat.
Getting rid of the old fat is a different matter.
For this, it's probably a good idea to do a lot, a whole lot, of that slow, gentle, sort-of-aerobic-but-so-slow-it's-really-not exercise.
Lots of gentle exercise, and by that, I mean a couple hours a day, is certainly a great way to burn fat.
But it takes a whole more time to do the exercise that burns fat than it does to do the exercise that makes sure you don't put on new fat.
Still, if your objective is a new and lighter you, a year from now you will say it was worth it.
