- In Canada's early days, Samuel de Champlain, the founder of New France, fulfilled some of the duties of the current governor general, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean. Later governors of New France carried out the role similar to that which, after confederation in 1867, became the responsibility of the governor general. In 1947, King George VI signed "letters patent" authorizing the governor general, with the advice of any or all members of the Privy Council for Canada, to act as head of state and commander in chief of Canada.

The governor general represents Canada in state visits out of the country and receives royal visitors, other heads of state and foreign ambassadors at her two official Canadian residences: Rideau Hall in Ottawa and the Citadelle in Quebec City. The governor general presents various awards in recognition of the achievements of exceptional Canadians. Since confederation, the Office of the Governor General has established more than 60 awards and trophies for excellence in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sports.These honors include the Order of Canada for lifetime achievement, the Caring Canadian Award for volunteerism, the Northern Medal for achievements related to the Canadian North as well as decorations for bravery. - Canada's parliament consists of the queen, represented by the governor general, the Senate and the House of Commons. The Canadian Constitution Act of 1867 placed executive power with the queen. In practice, however, as is the case in Great Britain, this power is exercised by the prime minister and his ministers. The governor general acts on the advice of the prime minister and government but may play an advisory role.The governor general presides at the swearing in of officials such as the prime minister, chief justice and the cabinet ministers. Parliament is summoned, suspended or prorogued and dissolved by the governor general. The Speech from the Throne, royal assent to documents and regular meetings with the prime minister are all facets of the governor general's governmental role.
- The governor general represents Canada when visiting other countries, bringing along delegates from every region of Canada for comprehensive support. Heads of mission sent to Canada present official credentials to the governor general while Canada's heads of mission receive documents signed by the governor general to present to officials abroad.
The governor general travels across Canada, engaging in dialogue with ordinary citizens, taking part in community activities and helping to foster a sense of national identity and unity within the country. - As commander in chief of Canada, the governor general becomes an honorary colonel of the Governor General's Foot Guards, Horse Guards, Grenadier Guards and chancellor and commander of the Order of Military Merit. Upon the recommendation of the prime minister, the governor general appoints the chief of the Defence Staff, the royal colonels of Canadian regiments and approves and awards military documents as well as signing the scrolls of commission for newly appointed officers.
The governor general is entitled to wear her own military uniform as prescribed by the Canadian Forces dress instruction manual CFP 265.
