How to Prevent Influenza Virus

    • 1). Learn the symptoms of the flu virus. Common symptoms include fever, chills, muscle or body aches, runny or stuffy nose, and fatigue. The virus spreads through droplets released through sneezing, talking or coughing. Sometimes the virus spreads through surfaces when germs are picked up by touching a surface and then the person's mouth, nose or eyes.

    • 2). Learn who is at a higher risk of complications when they get the virus. Overall, children under the age of five, adults over the age of 65, pregnant women, and those with medical conditions are at risk. If you fall into any of these categories, take extra precaution during flu season.

    • 3). Prevent the spread of the flu by washing your hands many times throughout the day using soap and water. Wash especially after sneezing or coughing into your hands. Cover your mouth with a tissue or your arm when sneezing or coughing to prevent the spread of germs. Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick or have the flu. If you contract the flu, drink plenty of fluids and stay home in bed resting for at least 24 hours.
