- Glass blocks make an excellent watertight medium for outdoor lights. Carefully drill a hole on one of the short sides of the block, and slide in a bulb. Decorate the outside of the glass block with low-cost plastic sun catchers for an additional nice effect. Space the blocks every few feet and use to line a walkway, or border a patio.
- A glass block or piece of a glass block makes an ideal paperweight, and is a very simple project. Use the glass block as the base of the weight, and decorate it in the manner you like. If you are using a full block, consider drilling a hole and stuffing it with pieces of decorative paper, such as wallpaper or gift-wrap. Decorate the outside of the block using vinyl decals or glass paint.
- A different Christmas project using a glass block involves making a small lamp for an under-the-tree Christmas village. Drill a small hole in one side of the block, large enough in which to fit a strand of Christmas lights. Stuff the block with a set of 25 to 50 miniature Christmas lights. That should be about as much as you can fit into a square glass block. Plug in the lights for a colorful lighting decoration underneath the Christmas tree or wrap the block in ribbon to make it look like a Christmas gift.
- Make a great decorative planter using five glass blocks. Use some of the glass block cement used to mortar blocks together. Stand four blocks together to make four walls, and cement each together. Use the fifth block as the base of the planter and cement it to the other four blocks. Flip the whole thing over once the cement cures for an attractive glass planter for real or synthetic flowers. Consider drilling holes in the base if you plan to use it with plants that require drainage.
