How to Store a Wool Coat

    • 1). Consult the care label on your wool coat and clean the coat before storing it. Most wool coats require dry cleaning. Storing an impeccably clean wool coat is extremely important for keeping insects away during storage--any stains in the wool will attract moths. If your wool coat does not have major stains, brush it thoroughly with a wool garment brush to clean it before storing it.

    • 2). Button the buttons to ensure the coat stays shaped properly (wool easily distorts). Fold the coat carefully and place it into the plastic container.

    • 3). Spread the cheesecloth squares out onto a flat surface and place 1 to 2 cups of cedar chips into the center of each square. Gather the edges of the squares and secure them with rubber bands.

    • 4). Place the cedar chip sachets into the plastic container with the wool coat to help repel moths.

    • 5). Seal the plastic container tightly with the lid and place the container in a cool and dry location for storage.

    • 6). Check the coat once or twice during the summer to ensure no insects have found the coat.
