Replacing a Dryer

    • 1). Unplug the old dryer and slide it away from the wall. You may need an assistant to help you if the dryer is too heavy.

    • 2). Turn off the gas shut-off valve behind the dryer if you are replacing a gas-powered unit. Use a pipe wrench to disconnect the dryer's gas line from the home's gas pipe. Disconnect the gas line from the dryer if you will be using it again to install your new dryer. Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the gas pipe. Use a flare cap to cover the end of the home's gas pipe if you will be replacing your old dryer with an electric model.

    • 3). Loosen the screw that holds the hose clamp onto the exhaust duct at the connection point to the home's vent. Remove the clamp and disconnect the duct. Repeat this step to disconnect the duct from the rear of the dryer if you will be re-using it.

    • 4). Have your assistant help you move the old dryer out of the way. Unpack and position the new dryer a foot or two away from the wall.

    • 5). Connect one end of the exhaust duct to the new dryer and the other end to the home's exhaust vent. If you are installing a gas dryer, attach one end of the gas line to the rear of the dryer and the other end to the home's gas supply pipe. Plug the dryer's electrical cord into the outlet. Slide the dryer back toward the wall, making sure not to pinch the power cord, gas line or exhaust duct.
