How to Refill Small Propane Tanks

    • 1). Turn the big supply tank of propane upside down. This will allow the pressure in the cylinder to push liquid and not gas through the valve.

    • 2). Chill the empty cylinder in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to create temperature and pressure differential. Pull the empty cylinder out of the refrigerator and attach the refill adaptor.

    • 3). Push the adaptor over the empty cylinder until it locks into place. Turn the threaded end into the full propane tank. Carefully turn on the full propane tank to let the propane begin transferring to the smaller empty cylinder.

    • 4). Turn off the valve, shutting off the propane tank once the cylinder has been completely filled. After refilling, place some soapy water on both valves and check for bubbles, which indicate leaks in the valve. If there are no leaks, continue on. If there are leaks, leave the tanks outside for a night to allow the propane time to dissipate and not collect.

    • 5). Remove the adaptor from the tank first, then from the cylinder. Put a cap on the cylinder to ensure the propane stays in.
