They seem to have more money than the original backpacker, or just don't try to hide it as backpackers used to do. They prefer to take the tourist bus with air-conditioning, and stay at the designer hostels, the so called 'boutique hostels', instead of the basic bunkbed, and they prefer the international ambience over local feeling at times. The hostels in cities like Pari, New York and Melbourne have cool bars so you don't even have to step out of your comfort zone to go out at night.
It's practically obligatory for the hostel now to provide WIFI Internet access to their guests. And with your GPS device on your mobil phone nowadays, you're never really lost. Staying online all the time has the benefit that you never really miss out on your family or friends while travelling, because you can see them everyday on skype. Add the fact that you can upload pictures daily on social networks, twitter or perhaps even maintain your own website or blog.
So you're as tech-savvy as James Bond but the question is, are you having any adventure? Never lost or uncomfortable? You have to admit there is a certain charm of actually trying to eat, live and travel like the locals, even though it means having honey roasted bugs (in certain faraway destinations), or the 50 cent noodle soup on the corner, travelling third class on the train, or sleeping on a doormat in a bungalow. Carrying too many valuables like computers and cameras will also eventually limit your freedom with the fear of being robbed.
