Yellow nail tips are a common problem that are most often caused by nail polish. Wearing nail polish too frequently can deprive your nails of oxygen, leading to a yellowed appearance, and darker nail polish colors can contain dyes that react with nails, leaving them yellow. Severely yellowed nails may be the result of a more serious problem such as a fungal infection, nutritional deficiency, or diabetes, kidney or liver disease, so visit your doctor if you believe this may be the case. - One simple solution to yellow nail tips is to paint on a French manicure. French manicures involve painting the tips of nails with white polish, then applying a pink or tan polish all over to give a clean, fresh look. Many whitening pens and pencils are available at drug stores to easily achieve the white-tipped French manicure look.
- You can create a simple whitening paste to apply to your nail tips easily at home. Simply mix 1 tbsp of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with 2 1/2 tbsp of baking soda in a small bowl, creating a paste-like consistency. Apply the mixture underneath and on top of nail tips, using a cotton swab and let it sit for three minutes, then rinse with water. For a natural version of this solution, mix 1 tbsp of lemon juice with 1 tbsp of baking soda to create the paste.
- Many of the products meant to whiten teeth can also whiten nail tips. Use a nail brush or old toothbrush to apply a small amount of whitening toothpaste to the tops and undersides of nail tips. Scrub the paste in, then rinse and repeat until tips look whiter. Another solution is to dissolve one to two tablets of denture cleaner into a small bowl of water. Soak your nails in the water for five minutes, then rinse.
