- 1). Place a plastic or metal spatula on a block of wood of your choosing, such as pine or cedar. Trace the outline of the plastic or metal spatula onto the wood block with a marker to create a template to follow.
- 2). Place the wood block into a table vice and clamp down each side, leaving the template exposed, if using a jigsaw. In the alternative, place the wood block onto the scroll saw's cutting surface. Put on safety glasses and cut along the outline on the wood block. Cut slowly and carefully, following the template lines.
- 3). Draw two straight lines on the blade of the spatula with a marker and ruler to create tapers. Drill into one end of each line with a small bit to make a pilot hole for starting points. Insert a Dremel tool blade into one pilot hole and cut, following the drawn line. Repeat on the other drawn line.
- 4). Pick up the cutout spatula and manually sand to remove any splinters and make the whole surface smooth. Round the handle if desired. Simply cradle sandpaper in one hand and turn the blade back and forth with the other hand. Sand the entire spatula until smooth.
- 5). Apply a coat of food-safe varnish to the spatula with a paintbrush if desired. Wipe away excess as needed with a cloth and allow to dry as long as the manufacturer recommends.
