- 1). Cut the flaps off two cardboard boxes. Use boxes that fit inside each other with 2 to 4 inches of space on all sides. The boxes must be tall enough to accommodate your cooking pots.
- 2). Cut a sheet of foil-backed insulation to fit inside the larger box. Lay the insulation inside the bottom of the large box with the foil side facing up.
- 3). Cut sheets of insulation to the same size as the four sidewalls of the larger box. Tape these in place on the inside of the walls, with the foil side facing inward.
- 4). Spray paint the interior of the smaller box black. Alternately, line the inside of the smaller box with aluminum foil. Black helps collect heat while foil helps reflect it onto the cooking pots. Either method is sufficient for a solar cooker.
- 5). Set the smaller box inside the larger box. Add sheets of insulation if necessary so the boxes fit together snugly.
- 6). Set a sheet of glass or Plexiglas on top the box. Place the oven in an area that receives full sun. Place a brick under one end so the box tilts in the direction of the sun, which helps the inside receive full sunlight.
