- 1). Wear protective goggles and gardening gloves when working with electric cutters and chemical herbicides.
- 2). Cut away as much of the unwanted hedge as you can with electric trimmers, cutting shears or other tools. Remove all branches and the main body of the hedge. You should be left with a stump or some basic roots.
- 3). Dig up the area to remove roots or the trunk of the hedge. If you have multiple hedges or an extensive root system that will require too much physical labor to remove manually, treat the stumps or roots with an herbicide containing glyphosate to kill the hedge.
- 4). Repeat herbicide application every two to three weeks; follow your product's specific instructions regarding treatment options. Apply them until the hedge's roots or stumps are dead.
