The typical 'Saas-Bahu' melodrama is still persistent on the small screen, wherein the cunning and poignant 'Saas' continues to plot troubles and problems for her abiding 'Bahu'. Yet, the 'Bahu' seems to retaliate back with her wit and smartness. This screenplay was much cherished by the audience, until it became monotonous. Now, after a decade, the small screen scriptwriters have brought in a new twist to the same 'Saas-Bahu' storyline, but with a fine blend of ambitions and aspirations.
Such a new twist with the perfect mix of ambitions and ethnicity is perfectly found on the sets of Diya Aur Baati Hum - a story of a woman, who aspires to be an IPS officer.Unlike the typical storyline which begins with introduction of characters, this soap opera debuts with a troubled situation. The situation challenges the academic skills of Sandhya, and forces her to get married with Suraj. The marriage strictly means giving up individual aspirations and dreams, but Sandhya is quite reluctant to give up. Despite of getting married hurriedly with Suraj, she continues to take her education secretly. Her drive for success bears good fruit when newspapers pompously talk about her acing the entrance exam for IPS.
However, the mother-in-law, Bhabho, comes from a traditional, conservative family background. Based on her upbringing, she wants Sandhya to join Suraj in their confectionery business. Sandhya, on the other hand, is not acquainted with cooking, and struggles to support her husband's business. However, the unique point which captivates the audience to watch this TV serial, day after day, is the understanding and supportive nature of Suraj. He supports Sandhya in her dream to become an IPS officer, and goes against the whole family for savouring it. The word gets out that Sandhya has aced her exams, and Bhabho is seen getting infuriated by it.
The strict mother-in-law does not believe in making her daughter-in-law, an IPS officer. As a result, Sandhya is seen undergoing a series of events, which test her persistence and drive to succeed. Eventually, Bhabho appears to be convinced, but is bothered about the fact that an IPS officer gets posting anywhere in India. Later, she finds out that the one who aces the training period earns the privilege to select his posting place. So, in the later Diya Aur Baati Hum episodes, Bhabho is seen pushing Sandhya to take her training seriously.
However, the police training is not easy as a walk in the park. Since the first day, Sandhya is forced to challenge her physical limits and is left with mental stress by the end of the day. Yet, she is found struggling and competing with her batch mates. Will Sandhya continue to push her limits? Will she qualify for the trophy of best cadet in the academy? Is the training too hard for Sandhya? Can Suraj manage to support her and continue to go against the family? This TV serial is packed with several values which describe the neo-modern setting. Stay tuned to catch new twists and turns in this out-of-the box story, which rolls on Star Plus, every weekday.
