- You can make a vintage-looking birdcage veil to wear to your wedding or other formal event with a metal hair comb and a few other supplies from the craft store. Just take an 18-inch-square piece of netted material and trim the two corners on one end so that the piece is tapered. At the other end of the square piece of netting, stitch through each little connecting square along the edge. You don't need to use a fancy stitch to do this, just go from the front of the fabric to the back of the fabric with one stitch and back the other way with the next; continue to stitch from front to back and back to front all the way across the edge. When you make it all the way along the edge, gather the fabric up by pulling your thread taut and pushing the fabric all to the end that you started at. Without tying off the stitch, stitch the gathered end of the veil to your metal hair comb. You can simply look the needle and thread around the top edge of the hair comb to do this. Decorate your birdcage veil with silk flowers, fancy feathers or interesting buttons to give it a more personal touch.
- You can turn a plain metal hair comb into a decorative hair accessory with some hot glue and simple embellishments. You can do something as simple as running a line of hot glue along the top edge of the metal hair comb and then dipping it into a paper plate full of small beads. You can also attach a grouping of coordinating decorative buttons to the top of the hair comb. You can make a simple fabric flower by cutting a bunch of fabric circles out and stitching them together, and then attach your fabric flower to the metal hair comb. You can use almost any small trinket to embellish a plain metal hair comb such as old metal bottle caps, colorful zippers or colorful paperclips.
- Traditional wedding veils can cost you a bunch in bridal shops, but you can make your own, or offer to make one for an engaged friend as a wedding gift, for much less. Choose a lightweight sheer fabric, such as tulle, and get twice as much tulle as the desired length of the veil. Fold the tulle in half so that you now have two layers that are the desired length of the veil. Round the corners of the bottom layer. Trim the top layer of tulle so that is is 3 to 6 inches shorter than the bottom layer, making sure to give the top layer rounded corners as well. Do a simple back and forth stitch along the folded edge and then bunch the tulle together by pulling the stitch taut and bunching the fabric on the thread. Stitch this end to the top edge of your hair comb. Decorate the top of the veil with silk flowers, feathers or rhinestones if you like.
