Playing at his beloved Oakmont, Arnold Palmer appears in the U.S. Open for the last time.

Nick Price wins the British Open and the PGA Championship.

Ernie Els wins a 3-way playoff for his first U.S. Open title. Els, Loren Roberts and Colin Montgomerie play 18 holes, with Els and Roberts shooting 74 and Montgomerie 78. Els then beats Roberts on the second extra playoff hole.

Wynstone Golf Club in Illinois is the first golf course to ban metal spikes on golf shoes. The move signals the beginning of the end of metal spikes in recreational play, and ushers the recently invented Softspikes into the spotlight.

In the Kroger Senior Classic, 78-year-old Jerry Barber records a score of 69, nine strokes lower than his age. This is believed to be a record on professional tours for beating one's age by the most strokes.

The Presidents Cup is played for the first time. It is modeled after the Ryder Cup, but pits the U.S. team against the "International" team, comprised of players from outside Europe. The U.S. wins the inaugural event, 20-12.

At age 18, Tiger Woods becomes the youngest to win the U.S. Amateur. He does it in style, rallying from six holes down to defeat Trip Kuehne.

The Mercedes Championships feature both a regular Tour event and a Senior Tour event. Phil Mickelson wins the PGA Tour division and Jack Nicklaus the Senior division.

In semi-retirement at age 46, Johnny Miller wins the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the last of his 25 PGA Tour victories.

Annika Sorenstam joins the LPGA Tour. She does not win a tournament, but is named Rookie of the Year.
