Geno Smith absent from Jets pregame intros
It all seemed like the same general routine the New York Jets run through in each of their home games.
The giant blowup runaway is set up near the East corner of MetLife Stadium. The fog machines create a smokey entrance to the field for the Jets players and fire shoots out of cannons set up at the end of the pathway. It's the final hoorah for players before stepping on the field.
Monday night against the Miami Dolphins, it was the offenses turn to be announced.
Percy Harvin ran through the tunnel, Eric Decker, too. The Jets offensive line, backfield and others all took their turns hearing their names bellowed over the PA system and to the home crowd.
All but one.
Geno Smith, New York's old new starting quarterback, chose not to be announced before Jets loss No. 10 of the season to the Miami Dolphins.
"I just wanted to run out with the team," Smith said. " I wanted to run out with the guys. It was my own decision and that's what I did."
It was an odd occurrence, and the first time Smith's done such a thing in his time as the Jets starting quarterback. The second-year pro has fallen out of favor with Jets fans lately and many expected to let him know as such with his pregame run-on. Despite this, Smith said it had nothing to do with any kind of hazing the former second-round pick could have gotten from fans.
"I wanted to run out with my guys. I just wanted to go out there with them," Smith said. "I wanted to watch my offensive line come out and watch the rest of the guys come out and shake their hands and be a part of the team and do those things.
There was no direct reasoning for it. It was just my decision."
