Student Of The Year Review Rating: 3/5 stars (three stars) Star Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Rishi Kapoor,, Ram Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Kajol (guest appearance).
What's Good : the locations, the costumes, the direction, the humour with a Youngistani language What's Bad: unrequired songs, not-so-believable plot Loo Break: during 1 or 2 songs Watch or Not: You surely don't want to miss this flick if you like commercial, typically- Bollywood films and can digest a cliché story yet again, just in a stylized, high budget avatar.
Karan Johar this time serves to you the same old coffee in a new cup.
High-school buddies going jealous and ambitious out of the desire of winning a competition has been a tried-and- tested script in Bollywood for long.
But the director makes sure that the film is an audio-visual delight for the audience by successfully including picturesque locales, designer costumes and the tongue of today's youngistan.
Rohan (Varun Dhawan), a rich spoilt brat, throws his weight around in the school when Abhimanyu (Sidharth Malhotra), a small-town, hard-working and ambitious boy, steps in as a potential threat.
With a few scenes depicting Shanaya (Alia Bhatt), a rich, brand-conscious girl trying to get back the love out of her relationship with Rohan, the film's plot mainly revolves around how the best buddies become enemies, with one trying to win the 'Student of the Year' title to make it big in life and the other to prove his dad that he is no longer his good-for-nothing son.
Student Of The Year Review: Script Analysis The script has nothing new to offer and is very predictable.
Though decorated with characters like a gay dean (Rishi Kapoor), the script lacks freshness that is expected out of Bollywood's A-listers like Karan Johar.
This, compounded by the plot of a 5-star school with world class facilities and students in informal clothes made the script all the more hard to digest.
Student Of The Year Review: Star Performances Simply put, Varun Dhawan brings the dance moves, Sidharth Malhotra showcases his acting skills and alas! Alia Bhatt hardly has any dialogues to her credit.
She comes out as a Barbie doll with average performance.
The other actors like Ronit Roy, Rishi Kapoor and a handful of school students added much value to this film.
All three actors get a fair chance of showcasing their hot, enviable bodies on screen.
Student Of The Year Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects One thing that surely doesn't disappoint you is the direction.
Karan Johar has lived up to his expectations one more time.
As far as music is concerned, the USP of this flick is- using a bunch of old Bollywood songs throughout the movie, at various times.
Though lyrics of 'Ishq Wala Love' made people raise an eyebrow, rest of the catchy up-beat tracks are entertaining.
The narrative adopted, with passed-out students telling the tale, along with the screenplay, are worth appreciating.
Student Of The Year Review: The Last Word Go for it, if you place style over substance.
Yet another commercial entertainer, with high budget, fresh faces and entertainment.
