Do You Need A Wedding Videographer?

Your wedding is one of the most important days in your life and you want to keep the best record possible of it. These days, that means making a video and a professional videographer is the best source for doing so.

In one sense, videographers have been around ever since the advent of film. In the beginning, the weddings of the very rich and famous could be captured on film. As home cameras became popular more and more people were anxious to recapture this special memorable day on film. In many cases, the first wedding videographer was a well meaning relative with a bulky home camera who most often got in the way and spoiled the mood of the wedding while producing a low quality, choppy and unedited film reproduction of the event.

The thing was that people still generally were happy. Despite the disturbance and the low quality, the idea of a live film of this special day was always popular. It was never intended as a replacement for the traditional wedding pictures, but rather as a supplement to them. Gradually, over the years, some of these well meaning relative types began to develop both skill and interest in filming special events. Many began to do it as a part time business.

Eventually, wedding videographers became organized. The major organizing group was the Wedding & Event Video Association International (WEVA) which became a standard setting and promotional group. It was in the mid-1990's with the advent of the digital camera that Wedding and Event Videographer really began to hit its full potential. No longer was quality poor and the digital camera was basically unobtrusive. No longer was the cameraman in the way, but was able to film the entire event without being noticed.

Another major innovation was the development of editing aids like the Newtek Video Toaster and other low cost non-linear computer based editing software that allowed creative and low cost editing that could turn the wedding video into something closely resembling a Hollywood movie for a very low cost. The Wedding Videographer moved from being something reserved for the elite to something available for even a budget wedding.

Some people might question the need for a professional wedding videographer in this day of low cost digital recording devices. People are able to take videos with their cell phones these days and the well meaning relative still can be found filming weddings as well as most other life events. However, another thing has not changed. These amateur films remain just that. The ability of the professional wedding videographer to capture the event with technical skill and edit it into a high quality product is what makes him an essential part of the wedding planning process. It is too important to trust such a once in a lifetime event to an amateur.
