- 1). Remove dirt and oil buildup by washing the hair with shampoo and conditioner. Dry with a towel to absorb as much moisture as possible. Blow dry the hair on a cool setting or leave damp.
- 2). Use a hair pick to raise hair strands by beginning at the roots and picking the hair straight up and out. Use the hands to pat down the higher sections to create a uniform, rounded shape.
- 3). Avoid touching the hair during the day, since this creates indentations in the rounded shape. Resting the head against an object or wall flattens the hair.
- 4). Keep the Afro from becoming brittle and dry during the day by misting the hair with a light moisturizing spray.
