The Temple of the Tooth Relic is one of Sri Lanka's most religious and sacred temples as it is home to the tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The temple is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also one of the most visited temples.
One of the most popular cities in the Central Province of Lanka is Kandy. The city, which was the location of the last Sinhala Kingdom, is known for its rich history and culture, making it a city symbolic of Cylon heritage. The town is known for its many historic and cultural monuments and landmarks which are complemented by the area's stunning natural beauty. One of the most famous landmarks of Kandy, which also is one of the most holiest and sacred temples of Sri Lanka is the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
The Temple of the Tooth also known as the 'Sri Daladha Maligawa' is a Buddhist temple located within the complex of what was the compound of the Royal Palace of Sri Lanka. As its name suggests, the Temple of the Tooth Relic houses the upper left canine tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The temple is one of the foremost temples amongst Buddhists around the world and has also been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to legend, the tooth relic housed in the Temple of the Tooth Relic was taken directly from the funeral pyre of Lord Buddha. Thereafter, in 313 AD the tooth relic was smuggled to Sri Lanka in the hair of Prince Hemamali. The tooth relic was moved to various locations around Lanka as the seat of the royal throne moved, until finally it came to rest within the sacred walls of the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Today this object rests within an ivory case laid upon a lotus flower made of pure gold and covered with a jewelled casket that is placed atop a throne. While access to the relic is limited, hundreds of people visit this temple each day to offer prayers or to observe the beauty and intricacy of the temple's architecture, wall and wood carvings, marvellous structural design and other historic and cultural artefacts. During the month of July the temple hosts the Esala Perahera, which is one of the country's most amazing cultural, religious and festive processions.
