- 1). Examine the tear. If it is a simple tear, you should be able to repair it easily. If it is a larger rip, then you may need to repair it with a patch.
- 2). Place a piece of thin cardboard between the shell of the jacket and the lining, assuming it has one. This will prevent you from sewing the lining to the shell when you make the repair.
- 3). Thread a needle with thread that closely matches the color of the jacket and stitch the tear closed. Use a straightforward over-and-under stitch, which is accomplished by inserting the needle close to the tear and pulling it through the other side of the fabric. Repeat until the rip is sewn shut. Remember to knot the end of the thread to stop it from pulling through the fabric.
- 4). Backstitch over several stitches on the other side of the tear. According to the website Alternative Windows, this is achieved by working a few stitches, then making one stitch and a space. Pull the needle and thread it up thorough the underside of the fabric and back again.
- 5). If the jacket has a large tear, use a patch to repair it. Choose a patch with a color and texture that matches the fabric of the jacket. Make sure that it is large enough to cover the tear. Hand sew or machine stitch the patch into place.
