- Throw a costume party in celebration of the birthday. You might choose a traditional theme such as romantic couples through the century, or get a little bit creative and have a toga party or a gathering where everyone wears his or her pajamas. Another option would be to have a luau and serve fruity, frozen drinks, a western, or a party based upon the birthday girl's favorite sports team, decade, movie or television show.
- For appetizers, pass around soup in shot glasses and nuts, fruit or candy in martini or margarita glasses. You may choose not to serve a full meal, but for heartier dishes after the appetizers, bake a loaf of beer bread or order in penne a la vodka. Choose drinks that suit the birthday girl's tastes. Set up a wine tasting at home, purchase different international beers or create an array of different flavored martinis and margaritas.
- Instead of having a party at home, consider going out for the day, but not to a traditional bar or club. Check out local wineries and breweries and find a limousine company to take the birthday girl and her friends so that they do not have to drive. Another option is to have an in-home cooking class, take a pottery-making class or have a day to go out with all the girls for a spa day.
- Buy a gift based on the number 21 as well as what the birthday girl likes. You could give a multiple of 21 in cash or a check. If she loves the beach, purchase a new beach bag, sunglasses or a gift certificate to her favorite summer clothes shop. A gift certificate to a makeup or hair-product store or simply buying products from one of these shops for the birthday girl would be appropriate as well.
