How to Troubleshoot Electroplating

    • 1). Check the temperature of the nickel plating bath. The temperature should be between 130 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2). Clean and replace the filter as needed. The filter must be able to pump clean solution into the dipping vat up to two times in one hour. Carbon powder needs to be added to the solution weekly. The mixing ration is .25 ounce of powdered to 1 ounce granular carbon to 100 gallons of distilled water.

    • 3). Skim the dipping vats weekly for dropped items while dipping. Also check the hooks and rails that bring the item to the dipping vats and the rails that dip the item. Make sure the nickel plating solution is agitating. A low-pressure blower keeps the solution moving in the vat, creating an agitation.

    • 4). Test the mixture for proper ingredients and measurement of ingredients. A nickel plating solution needs 40 ounces of nickel sulfate, 12 ounces of nickel chloride, 6 ounces of boric acid, a pH of 4-4.5 and surface tension of 40 -45 dynes/cm.
