Panic attacks are caused when we suddenly become really afraid of something or some situation that was totally unexpected. It is not that you will face the attack only at daytime or when you are awake, it may happen at night and also when you are sleeping. There are different types like situational predisposed, cued & spontaneous panic attacks.

It all starts when our mind mistakenly interprets a situation as threatening to life & automatically triggers the flight or fight behavior. The mind either overreacts to a problem or some times there is no actual serious problem for such a reaction.

Panic attacks could be heredity problem that a person gets from others in the family, some kind of phobia that the person has, due to medication taken by a person, as many medications mention them as side effects or temporary nature which show up at the onset or could also continue while the treatment on or could also be because of pharmacological triggers generated by use of anti-depressants or stimulants.

The Symptoms

  1. Increase in heart beat and pulse rate
  2. Nausea, sweating, dizziness and chest pain
  3. Hot flushes, difficult breathing and feeling of choking
  4. Death fear and as if the person is losing control

Different methods are used to get rid of this problem such as exposure therapy, cognitive behavior therapy and relaxation techniques.

Exposure Therapy: In this type of therapy the person faces similar situation under controlled environment so that his sensitivity decrease to that situation.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy: In this method the psychologist goes through the triggers for the problem and teaches preventive techniques to patient.

Relaxation Techniques: The mains causes of these attacks are increase in anxiety as well as stress levels in a person's life. By doing meditation, yoga or deep breathing relaxation techniques it becomes possible to control stress and reduce chances of occurrence of this problem.

This problem is becoming quite common nowadays and it can be managed & cured if proper techniques are used as mentioned in the above sections.
