- The most commonly reported side effects of Acamprosate are difficulty sleeping, weakness, dizziness, diarrhea, gas, nausea and loss of appetite. None of these is cause for concern. Because Acamprosate can cause dizziness, patients should use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring concentration until they know how the medication will affect them.
- It is rare for patients taking Acamprosate to experience serious side effects. However, some side effects could indicate that a potentially serious medical problem has developed. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: suicidal thoughts or behaviors; mental or mood changes, depression, behavior changes, anxiety, nervousness or panic attacks. Your family and friends should be aware of any changes in behavior and report them to the doctor immediately.
- It is possible you may experience an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in the medication. Signs of an allergic reaction include swelling of the face, throat, mouth, lips or tongue; hives; wheezing; shortness of breath; and tightness in the chest. People experiencing a severe allergic reaction can go into shock or lose consciousness, so seek immediate medical treatment at the first sign of a severe reaction.
- Acamprosate is not safe for all people, including those with severe kidney problems. It also may not be a safe option for people with a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or actions. Discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Acamprosate.
- No medications are specifically known to cause dangerous reactions when taken with Acamprostate, but you always tell your doctor and pharmacist about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, you take before starting a new medication.
