Cornrow Techniques

    Basic Cornrows

    • Cornrows originally got their name because they look like rows of corn growing in a field. They're basically small French braids. In order to braid a basic cornrow, part the hair into a 1-inch wide row from front to back. Then, part off a small section of hair from the front of the row. Begin braiding the section and work your way down to the nape of the neck, picking up hair as you go. If you discover that the hair is longer than the nape of the neck, continue braiding as a free braid. At the end of the row, fasten the braid with an elastic. Part off another row of hair, and continue French braiding in this way until the entire head is done.

    Creative Cornrows

    • Cornrow styles are only limited by the braider's--and the wearer's--imaginations. Although many wearers prefer the classic look, many, especially young men, are getting different patterns for their hair. Try getting a dollar sign braided into your hair, or a maze pattern like Allen Iverson. A Belgian waffle pattern also looks good. This particular style is done by alternating cornrows and individual braids. The individual braids are crossed over each other and reconnected to the scalp by cornrow. Cornrows starting at the hairline and moving diagonally across the head is another wonderful geometric design; this style is one of the easiest, since it's a slight variation on the classic cornrow.

    Tips and Tricks for Cornrows

    • Remember, cornrows don't have to go in straight lines from hairline to nape. They can be braided into spirals, squares or other geometric shapes. In order to do this, the braider must have a clear idea of what the design should look like when finished. When you part the hair, make sure it's clean and easy to see. Treat the hair with a holding gel before you braid, and braid snugly (as opposed to tightly). The key to creative cornrows is to part the hair into the desired shapes, then braid as you go. To take care of your cornrows, wash as infrequently as possible. If you do wash, use the fingertips to clean the scalp, rather than cleaning the hair itself. A leave-in conditioning spray is also a good idea to keep your hair healthy and your style looking great.
