- 1). Remove manure from stalls on a daily basis. Setting down wood shavings instead of straw or hay to absorb animal urine, can help reduce breeding sites for stable flies.
- 2). Spread stockpiled manure weekly, in a thin layer on your fields if you grow crops. Stockpiled manure is generally used for crop nutrients. Spreading the manure can help dry it out, preventing stable flies from laying eggs.
- 3). Cover manure piles with black polyethylene plastic, suggests the Public Health Entomology Research and Education Center of Florida. Allow the pile to compost if you don't intend to use the manure. This keeps stable flies away from the compost.
- 4). Hang sticky traps from the ceilings of your livestock facilities or stalls. Discard used traps and put up new ones as necessary.
- 5). Spray insecticides containing pyrethrin or permethrin for severe infestations. Apply the insecticides to the walls where stable flies frequent. The use of knockdown sprays, which have timed aerosol release, can help to kill flies, but you may need to repeat treatments.
