- 1). Wash your bed linens in hot water, using laundry detergent. The heat of the water will kill mites that are on your linens.
- 2). Dry your linens in the dryer.
- 3). Cover your mattress, box spring and all pillows with dust mite covers. Existing mites are trapped in there where they will not harm you and will suffocate without air. New mites won't be able to penetrate the dust mite covers.
- 4). Treat carpets with a carpet-treatment product designed to kill dust mites, such as a spray or powder. Follow the application instructions on your specific product.
- 5). Rewash your bed linens weekly in hot water to kill any new mites that might have been introduced to the environment.
- 6). Run a dehumidifier in your room to naturally eliminate dust mites. These pests greatly dislike dry air. Relative humidity of 35 percent to 50 percent will repel the mites, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. If you use a dehumidifier, make sure to clean the tray frequently to prevent mold growth.
- 7). Dust dry surfaces in your home frequently, and vacuum floors to make your home inhospitable to these pests.
