The Top 6 Most Common Dental Emergencies: How to Handle Them

Dental emergencies are a fact of life. Whatever the cause may be, it has to be handled properly to avoid other complications and save lives. In this article, you will discover how to handle these kinds of emergencies especially if you face one. Here are some of them:

1.    Toothaches – as simple as it sounds, toothaches are very hard to bear. It can affect your work and is very painful. When you have tooth ache, do not put any medications like aspirin on the teeth. These can cause damage to your gums and can lead to infections. The best thing to do when you have toothache is to clean your mouth and remove any food debris that is stuck in between the teeth. If the pain does not go away, call your dentist immediately.

2.    Tooth that is broken – This is an emergency indeed and must be attended by a dentist right away. You can also apply a cold compress on the affected area to reduce swelling and pain. Do not take any medication unless your dentist tells you to do so.

3.    Broken Jaw - a possible broken jaw is one of the dental emergencies that are not to be ignored. If you suspect that your jaw is broken, call your dentist immediately and apply a cold compress on your jaw.

4.    Knocked tooth     - if your tooth is knocked out, call your dentist right away. If this is not possible, clean the knocked tooth gently. Do not remove any tissues that are still attached to your tooth. If it is possible, put back the tooth on your mouth where it is placed before it was knocked off. If that is not possible, go to a dental clinic and bring the knocked tooth with you and the dentist will surely know what to do in that situation.

5.    Bitten tongue – this is a common accident especially in children. When this happens, be sure to clean the tongue or lip that is bitten, and then apply cold compress to stop the bleeding and swelling. But if the bleeding does not stop, it is time for you to go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.

6.    Something stuck between the teeth – if you feel that there is something that is in between your teeth. You can use dental floss and carefully insert it between the teeth. Be careful in using flosses because it can cut your gums if it is not used properly. If you are not able to remove the foreign object between your teeth, it is best to call your dentist.
