Beauty Advancements in the 21st Century

    Stem Cell Facelifts

    • Anyone who has observed the many faces of actress Joan Rivers knows that facelifts are not new to the beauty community. However, stem cell facelifts are an emerging form of cosmetic surgery that utilizes stem cells from a patient's fatty tissue. According to a "Los Angeles Times" article, two Beverly Hills doctors have begun performing the procedures and claim to have seen positive results. One of the surgeon's, Dr. Nathan Newman, has performed over 200 of the surgeries in the last five years and claims that his patients have experienced "fantastic results." However, Dr. Michael McGuire, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cautions people that scientists are still ten years away from effectively harnessing stem cell use for cosmetic procedures and states that any claims that easy stem cell facelifts can be performed are scams.

    Beauty Apps

    • Technology is no longer just for the whiz kids. The increasing popularity of apps or applications has largely impacted the beauty community. Previously, consumers sought beauty advice from their hair stylists, in magazines or on the Internet. However, anyone who owns an iPhone, iPod or any other application-supporting device can get beauty tips and information right at their fingertips.

The website Daily Makeover (dailymakeover.com) recommends such apps as Celebrity Makeup Looks, which offers step-by-step instructions to get the hottest celebrity looks or iSurgeon, which allows users to upload their picture and see how they would look after plastic surgery.

    Gel Nails

    • Nails are an important beauty feature for many women, but they often require regular maintenance. According to Marie Claire (marieclaire.com) gel nails are rising in popularity in Japan. Getting gel nails is a simple treatment, which involves an application of thin layers of gel to real or fake nails followed by curing under ultraviolet light. Gel manicures come in hundreds of shades, take a short period of time to dry and generally last for a month.

    High-Definition Makeup

    • When high-definition television rendered regular makeup ineffective for use on celebrities, high definition makeup arose. High definition makeup is designed to blend with the skin and uses light scattering ingredients to make the skin appear even and flawless. "USA Today" reports that makeup sellers have begun to target regular consumers with high-definition makeup and consumers are responding. Despite the increase in HD makeup sales, some beauty experts believe that this type of makeup is more appropriate for the big screen due in part to its lengthy application process.
