- 1). Place the get coat thickness tool at a 90-degree angle into a newly applied layer of gel coat. Press down on the gauge until it rests on the substrate material.
- 2). Pull the gauge off the gel coat.
- 3). View the notches on the gauge to see which ones are wet. Determine the largest tooth that's wet and the smallest tooth that's dry.
- 4). Subtract the thickness level of the dry tooth from the thickness level of the wet tooth. The result is the thickness of the gel coat.
- 5). Repeat this process to measure the thickness of additional gel coat layers.
