- 1). Form a slip knot around crochet hook. Insert the hook into a stitch at the edge of the hat with the hat right-side-out. Pull a loop of yarn through the hat's stitch and through the loop on the hook, forming a slip stitch. Chain 1 by wrapping the yarn around the hook and pulling it trough the loop on the hook.
- 2). Form a single crochet by inserting the hook into the next stitch of the hat. Yarn over the hook and pull the loop through the hat loop. Yarn over once more and pull the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook; this completes a single crochet. Work 2 single crochet stitches into the next stitch on the hat. Stitch one single crochet into each of the next 2 stitches of the hat. Continue crocheting in this pattern--2 single crochet in the next hat stitch, 1 single crochet in the next and 1 single crochet in the next--until you have completed the first row.
- 3). Join the last stitch of the first row into the first chain 1 space with a slip stitch, then chain 1. Place a single crochet in each stitch of the previous row. Join into the first chain one space with a slip stitch, then chain 1. Continue this same stitch pattern for the next 2 rows.
- 4). Work a single crochet into each of the next 5 stitches. Work 2 single crochet stitches into the next stitch. Continue using the pattern for the remainder of this row. Join as before.
- 5). Continue single crocheting into each stitch until the rim has reached the desired width. Tie off by cutting the yarn leaving 3 inches and by pulling the end through the last loop on the hook. Using the crochet hook, work the end of the yarn between the stitches to hide the loose end.
