Uses for Wheat Bread

    Typical Uses

    • You probably use and consume wheat bread regularly in your day-to-day life. Unless you go out of your way to avoid using wheat bread, it likely encases the fillings in your sandwiches. Toasted wheat bread topped with butter or jam is a typical part of breakfast. Hot dog buns, dinner rolls and hamburger buns are other examples of common uses of wheat bread.

    Bruschetta

    • Bruschetta is a common appetizer available in many Italian restaurants. This relatively simple dish, in its most basic and traditional form, consists of a slice of a baguette topped with garlic, tomatoes, cheese (often goat cheese) and basil. Less traditional toppings include such items as smoked salmon, fried green tomatoes or pancetta. If you are making bruschetta yourself, don't hesitate to experiment; it's easy to create delicious combinations using your own palate as a guide.

    French Toast

    • Basic French toast is nothing more than a slice of wheat bread soaked in eggs beaten with milk then fried until the egg is cooked. Feel free to add herbs or spices to the egg mixture for a savory version, or sprinkle the toast with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar when it is almost done cooking for a sweeter version. Top the French toast with anything you want; some ideas include crème fraiche, lavender honey or slices of fresh fruit.

    Bread Crumbs

    • Many recipes call for bread crumbs, and they can be useful even in those that don't require them. If the texture of spaghetti doesn't excite you, sprinkle a few spoonfuls of bread crumbs mixed with salt, pepper and a splash of olive oil over the top for a crunchy variation. You can also coat many things with breadcrumbs before frying them, ranging from fish to eggplant slices.

    Feeding Birds

    • A use for wheat bread that is particularly popular among young children is to feed the birds. Take a sliced loaf to the nearest lake to feed eager ducks and possibly geese or swans. Dry the bread, crumble it and scatter the crumbs across your porch or back yard to attract local birds.
