Indiana has four major snowmobile trails, all in the northern part of the state. All four trails operate from Dec. 1 to March 31 and are only open when snowfall is sufficient. To check current trail conditions visit indianasnowmobilers.com. Indiana's snowmobile trails are maintained by local snowmobile clubs, the Indiana Snowmobile Association and the Department of Natural Resources. All snowmobiles must be registered with the state. - The 60-mile Miami Snowmobile Trail in northeastern Indiana is named after the Miami tribe of Native Americans, who once occupied the land. The trail runs from Elkhart County to the Michigan state line in Vistula, Indiana and travels through secluded woodlands, open fields and the county fairgrounds. Open only to snowmobiles, the Elkhart County Snowmobile Club has maintained the trail since 1975.

miamitrail.org - Approximately 2 hours northeast of Indianapolis is the Heritage Snowmobile Trail. Maintained by the Hoagland Blizzard Blazers snowmobile club, the Heritage Trail is more than 30 miles long and runs through and around the small towns of Maples and Hoagland.

The trail encompasses flat, wide-open terrain and narrow wooded paths, crossing railroad tracks, passing lakes and hooking around the South Bend Motor Speedway. It also connects to a 25-mile trail that extends into Michigan. The trail is maintained by the Michiana Trail-Rider's Coalition.

gomtrc.com - Salamonie Snowmobile Trail runs through Huntington and Wabash counties in northeastern Indiana. Approximately 40 miles long, the Salamonie trail sits on public property near the 2,665-acre Salamonie Reservoir. The Salamonie Snowmobile Trail is surrounded by 12,433 acres of state forest and is maintained by the Salamonie Trailmasters Snowmobile Club.
