- 1). Find the correction shade of foundation that matches your skin color. The very basics of makeup begin with foundation. MAC foundations are highly acclaimed and they have a variety to choose from based on skin tone and type from oily to dry skin (see Resources). Once you have chosen the appropriate shade of foundation to match your skin color, use your fingers to apply it lightly on your face (make sure your hands are clean first before touching your face). Focus on problem areas such as under the eyes and around the nose. Be careful not to use too much---most people only need a pea size amount or one pump to cover their entire face. If you use too much, your face will look cakey and people will be able to tell you are wearing makeup.
- 2). Follow up foundation application with powder. MAC has a selection of powders and colors to choose from. Pick a shade that matches your skin color and use it to set your foundation. Setting your foundation will help to stop it from settling in the lines and creases in your face. Again, be sure not to use too much. Using a kabuki style brush to apply the powder will help you control how much you use. MAC sells these brushes in addition to makeup, and they are also very high quality. You could also use a sponge wedge to apply powder, but do not attempt to use your fingers as you will not be able to spread the powder efficiently.
- 3). Apply blush. MAC offers a huge selection of blushes ranging from the lightest pinks to dark plums. If you have lighter toned skin, go for a light pink or peach blush (such as MAC Pink Swoon or MAC Peaches). Darker skin tones would look nice with a plum or bright pink blush (like MAC Plumfoolery or MAC Dollymix). Use a brush to apply blush. The same kabuki brush you use for applying powder can also be used to apply blush lightly to the apples of your cheeks. Do not go overboard; you want the look of a natural flush, not of a clown.
- 4). Sweep a wash of color over the eyes using one of MAC's many eye shadows. Use an eye shadow applicator or an eye shadow brush (eye shadow brushes can also be found at MAC). If you are feeling more daring, use more than one shade in complementary colors. Create a smoky dark eye using gray and black shadows. For example, sweep gray shadow all over the eye lid such as MAC Knight and then blend a black eye shadow into the crease using Carbon or Black Tied. Finish off with some mascara from MAC such as Zoom Lash and your eyes are ready for a night out.
- 5). Choose a MAC lipstick to finish off your look. MAC is well known for their lipsticks and they have a huge variety of shades. Apply lipstick directly from the tube or use a lip brush for more precise application. Use your finger or makeup remover wipes to remove excess lipstick around your lips. If the color is particularly bright or strong, blot your lips on a tissue. Double check to make sure you don't have lipstick on your teeth. Keep in mind the finish of the lipstick. MAC's matte lipstick finishes tend to be more drying while Mac's Lustres are shinier and more moisturizing.
