- 1). Sign up for an online messaging service or an email account. This will allow you to easily send and receive messages to and from your online contacts. A majority of messaging and email services are free to use. The "sign-up" process involves providing basic information about yourself, such as your name and age, as well as selecting an email address or user name and password for accessing your account. Once your account is set up, you will be able to receive messages in your in-box or message center automatically.
- 2). Obtain the email or messaging address for the contact that you wish to send an online message to. Online messaging works in a similar fashion to traditional mail. In order for a message to reach its intended recipient, it must be correctly addressed. The best way to obtain a person's email or messaging address is by contacting him or her directly.
- 3). Compose and send your message. Click on the "new message" or "send message" option in your email account or messaging program. Type your message in the space provided. Type your contact's email or message screen name in the recipient bar at the top of the page. Click the "send" option to send your email or message.
