How to Replace a Thermostat on an Electric Clothes Dryer

    High-Limit Thermostat

    • 1). Disconnect your dryer from the electrical outlet and disconnect the dryer vent from the back of the dryer. Slide the dryer out away from the wall so you can access the rear panel.

    • 2). Remove the screws holding the rear panel in place. Depending on your dryer, the screws will either be Phillips screws or hex nuts, so use the appropriate screwdriver. Slide the rear panel away from the dryer.

    • 3). Slide the wires off of the contact posts on the thermostat to disconnect them. The high-limit thermostat will be located on the heating element housing. The heating element housing is typically located on the right side of your dryer. Make a note of where each wire was connected so you can easily reconnect them to the new thermostat.

    • 4). Remove the screws holding the old high-limit thermostat in place and remove it from the heating element housing. Place the new high-limit thermostat in position and screw it into place. Reconnect the wires to the thermostat. Replace the dryer's rear panel and reconnect the dryer vent. Plug the dryer back into the electrical outlet.

    Cycling Thermostat

    • 1). Disconnect the dryer from the electrical outlet and disconnect the dryer vent from the back of the dryer. Slide the dryer away from the wall. Use a Phillips screwdriver or hex nut driver to remove the screws holding the rear panel in place and remove the rear panel.

    • 2). Disconnect the wires from the cycling thermostat by sliding them off of the contact posts on the thermostat. Make a note of what post each wire was connected to. The cycling thermostat will typically be located on the exhaust vent, just above the exhaust port to which you connect the external dryer vent.

    • 3). Remove the screws holding the old cycling thermostat in place and remove it from the exhaust vent. Place a new cycling thermostat on the exhaust vent and screw it into place. Reconnect the wires to the thermostat.

    • 4). Replace the rear panel and reconnect the dryer vent. Plug the dryer back into the electrical outlet.
