Problems With the ABS on a Ford Expedition

    2008 Ford Expedition

    • A recall was issued on 2008 Ford Expedition for ABS due to some hydraulic valves in ESC module being built without extra check balls. This can restrict the flow of brake fluid through the valve and reduce brake power.

Each vehicle manufacturer was asked to file a defect report and remedy plan and repairs were made at no cost to owners.

The recall date was Dec. 13, 2007.

    1999 Ford Expedition

    • A recall was issued on the 1999 Ford Expedition for vehicles that may have had a missing or partially installed retainer clip that holds the master cylinder push rod to the brake arm pedal.

This could cause increased stopping distance, increasing the risk of collision.

Dealers were asked to inspect and repair affected models.

The recall date was Nov. 17, 1998.

    ABS Light On

    • An issue that arises across models with the Ford ABS is the indicator light on the dash staying on. According to You Fix Cars, this is generally a wiring problem giving false information to the brake sensors. If this is the case, it does not pose an immediate danger with regard to operating the vehicle.

Commonly recommended action is replacement of the wheel speed sensor.

    Identification

    • The ABS monitors electrical signals to determine how fast the wheels are slowing down during braking. If the ABS control module indicates the well is slowing too quickly, it automatically modulates the brake pressure to that wheel to prevent the wheel from locking and causing lost traction and inability to steer.

The ABS control module is supposed to continuously perform self-diagnostics. If the brakes appear to be modulating during regular braking or if they are not performing this automatic "pump" action, it indicates that the ABS is malfunctioning.

    Considerations

    • The 2008 or 1999 Ford Expedition had vehicles recalled based on specific ABS issues.

Problems with the indicator light may occur on any model and do not necessarily indicate an immediate issue with the brakes, but, if this light comes on, a professional mechanic should be consulted.

The ABS on the Ford Expedition and other vehicles are designed as a safety feature, but the modulating effect that is meant to prevent locking brakes should only occur when strong braking is required.
