- Spyramycin is a systemic antibiotic that is commonly prescribed to treat a wide variety of infections. Found in capsule form, spiramycin works to ward off infection by killing the bacteria that cause it. Spiramycin prevents bacteria from making the proteins critical to their survival, thus curing the infection.
- If you are prescribed spiramycin, it is important to finish the entire round of medicine, even if you are feeling better. Ceasing to take your spiramycin prescription before it is complete often results in reinfection and may require you to start a whole new prescription. Be sure to take each dose as recommended by your physician.
- While spiramycin works in your body, you may experience some side effects. While some of these side effects are not harmful (although they may be uncomfortable), some pose serious health risks. As with any medication, yellowing of the eyes or skin is a sign that the liver is not properly processing spiramycin in your body. This condition, called jaundice, is a serious medical condition. Should you experience jaundice after taking spiramycin or any medication, contact your physician immediately.
- Common side effects reported with the use of spiramycin include nausea, vomiting, loose stools and indigestion. These side effects are usually mild and don't cause enough discomfort to cause patients to stop taking their spiramycin prescriptions.
More serious side effects, which occur rarely but are considered to be highly dangerous, are bloody stools, chest pain, recurrent fainting, pain or tenderness of the abdomen and irregular heartbeat. If you should experience any of these symptoms while taking spiramycin, contact your physician at once. - While allergic reactions to spiramycin is rare, it should be regarded as serious. If you experience a skin rash, unusual bleeding or shortness of breath, you may be allergic to the ingredients in spiramycin. Discontinue use of the drug and contact your doctor immediately.
He will prescribe you a different antibiotic for your infection and will advise you how to handle your allergy.
