Dashing Neck Scarves

  Max H. Aronson was the first cowboy star of silent western short films, starting with "The Great Train Robbery" in 1903. Going by the screen name of Broncho (sic) Billy Anderson, his preferred western necktie was a solid-colored, fabric kerchief tied around the neck with a jaunty knot worn off-center and a few inches of kerchief dangled below the knot. During the 1910s through the '50s, many western actors imitated his western neck wear, including actor Clayton Moore from the western television series "The Lone Ranger."
  
  

Western Bow Tie

  Another wildly popular cowboy star of the early days of western movies was actor Tom Mix. In most of his films, Mix's western attire included the knotted neck scarf worn by other western stars of his time, although his was a bit wider, with longer, flamboyant ends dangling below the knot. As he got a little older, Mix favored western bow ties, which were narrower than typical bow ties. The western bow tie is a timeless classic that is suitable for any era where a western touch is sought.
  
  

Bolo Ties

  Bolo ties are long, thin lengths of finished leather worn looped under a shirt collar around the neck, then secured with an ornamental clasp. Such clasps could have custom-made designs or even hold a small conch shell. The leather tips of the length of leather are capped with ornamental agelts---or aiguillettes, decorative metal tips. As time goes by, bolo ties are typically seen on older, refined gentlemen wearing clothes with a western flair.
  
  

Western String Tie

• The western string tie resembles a thin bow tie with several inches of bow tie fabric ("string") hanging down below the bow. Usually black in color, the string tie was famously worn by actor Gary Cooper in the movie "High Noon" and by actor James Garner in the western television show "Maverick." To this day, you may occasionally see country western music stars wearing string ties at social functions.
